About Agnes McLaughlin

Mixed media artist on the Côte d'Azur

Biography

Agnes McLaughlin is an award-winning mixed media artist living on the French Riviera.

Trained in a variety of art techniques from sketching to collages, and drawing watercolours as well as painting with acrylics, she’s developed a unique style where she captures moments of beauty and intrigue in everyday life.

Learning different mixed media techniques through workshops by artists including the likes of Mike Bernard and Laura Rosana, as well as self-teaching, she’s developed her artistic style over a period of 20 years.

Inspired by artists such as Ian Fennelly, Fiona French, Jane Ray, Moira Huntly, Cathy Johnson and Jessie M King to name but a few, she often works with chalk pastels, polychromous colour pencils, felt tip pens and acrylic brushes to create her paintings and sketches.

Combining artistic techniques, she derives inspiration from real life situations, often spontaneously, to create her latest animal portraits or to capture the atmosphere of the people eating at the local brasseries and cafes in the south of France. The artist also embeds a touch of humour and emotion to each artwork that she creates to tell a more vivid story.

Exhibiting across France, her art has been featured in various galleries in Paris, Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Theoule-Sur-Mer. She has also participated in several group exhibitions with the Association des Artistes (ACCA) and has won several awards including the “Prix du Public Meilleure Aquarelle" ('Le Dompteur' - The Lion Tamer) at the Quel Cirque Exhibition, held in Valbonne.

Among her favourite techniques include combining collage art paper, watercolour paint and pastels to define landscapes as well as features of individuals and animals within each of her portraits. Oil pastels as well as charcoal sticks, brayers, and DIY brushes are some of the artistic tools she uses to bring personality to each of her drawings.

Her work has also been published in several books including renowned collage artist Pierre Jean Varet’s “Les techniques de l'art du collage” and “L’art du collage dans tous ses états”, available for sale in Le Fnac and on Amazon.

Agnes continues to experiment with mixed media techniques and has recently explored digital art creation, using apps to create animals from scratch with bold and charming personalities.
